We are pleased to announce that the \u00d6ZKD special issue dedicated to the conference 20th Century Housing Heritage in Europe: Conserving, Participating, and Adapting (TU Wien, 2024) has been published!<\/p>

With contributions from various European countries, the issue brings together articles that highlight new perspectives on the relationship between housing, cultural heritage, and social change in the European context. The case studies presented here combine heritage conservation, architectural history, and housing studies with current questions of sustainability, participation, and socio-spatial justice.<\/p>

We hope the conference proceedings provide an interesting review of the topics we discussed in relation to housing heritage.
We would also like to thank Bundesdenkmalamt Austria and \u00d6ZKD (\u00d6sterreichische Zeitschrift f\u00fcr Kunst und Denkmalpflege) as well a all participants for their cooperation on the conference and special issue.<\/p>

The conference focusses on housing concepts and built settlements of the 20th<\/sup>\u00a0century, which often explicitly addressed hygienical, ecological, communal, and social issues and necessities. We ask how these heritage values can be conserved for the sake of sustainable futures. Forms of use, social interaction, and participation might contribute to the care and careful adaptation of such sites, but also create conflicts. Various actors\u2014from business, politics, conservation, and civil society\u2014define, appropriate, and manage this housing heritage and need to be involved. The conference also examines housing and climate policies, development pressure, and vacancy as powerful contexts.<\/span><\/p>

We aim for an exchange of theories, reflections, and approaches in practice within the European context of conservation and planning; and specifically address those settlements that have gained listed status due to their artistic and architectural values, their planning ideas and urban design, and their social concepts. How do different actors value and manage these settlements today?<\/span><\/p>
